Basically the red light error is nothing but a problem with the Xbox 360 console when there is a malfunctioning within the console. The console is designed with some LED lights around the power button and these LED lights are used to indicate the status of the console. They glow in two colors either in green or red. The green state implies that the console is working properly without any problem. But the red light indicates that there is some problem with the console and moreover an error is indicated by some error message in the screen.
Three Red Light Errors
There are many types of red light errors in the console. Each error indication is different because it has different reason for those errors. The errors in the console are single, two, three, and four red lights error. When compared to the single, two and four red light errors, the three red lights error is more frequent in its occurrence. The single, two, and four red light errors occurs when there is loose connection in the cable, or when there is no disc in the DVD drive or the problem with the game settings. These problems can be solved easily. But the three red light error differs from all the others. If unresolved for a long time, this causes some failure in hardware that can be tough to solve. But it can be easily solved if noticed at the beginning or intermediate stages.
The reason for the three red light error is due to the failure of the console's cooling system. This failure is due to the overheating of the console that makes the processor and motherboard to stop its operation. Thus the game hangs up in the middle of the play, and users cannot save the game. The internal failure of the heat sinks underneath the motherboard leads to overheating of the console and stops the operations of the Central Processing Unit and Graphical Processing Unit. This three red light error can otherwise be called as "Red Ring of Death" or RRoD.
This problem can the solved by providing additional cooling to the heat sinks or cooling fans around the console. The Xbox 360 has a high speed Central Processing unit and high speed Graphical processors. Hence, they work really high speed to give the best graphical and high speed video games. Thus the processor gets overheat soon. Removing the X clamps from the motherboard is the best method to solve this problem. The X clamps are used to support the heat sinks under the motherboard. But due to overheat produced by the processors the heat sinks cannot perform their operation correctly. It fails to resist and the motherboard and the processor gets hang up and stops its operation. Replacing the heat sinks directly beneath the motherboard helps to cool the temperate around the processor and the board. This setup will also increase the airflow in to the console from the bottom.
